How to calculate gratuity in Qatar

Last reviewed: 14 June 2026Checked against the official rules. How we verify

Qatar's end-of-service gratuity is set by Labour Law No. 14 of 2004, Article 54. The rate is simpler than in most Gulf states: a flat three weeks' basic wage for every year of service. Here is the method, with a worked example.

In short

Qatar gratuity is at least three weeks' basic wage for each year of service, on your last basic salary, once you complete one year. Resigning does not reduce it.

Key facts

Rate
3 weeks (21 days) per year, all years
Eligibility
1 year of continuous service
Wage basis
Last basic wage (allowances excluded)
Maximum
No statutory cap
On resignation
Paid in full

01Step 1 — Find your daily basic wage

Gratuity is calculated on your last basic wage only; allowances are excluded. Divide your monthly basic wage by 30 to get your daily wage. For QAR 5,000 basic, that is 5,000 ÷ 30 = QAR 166.67 per day.

02Step 2 — Apply three weeks per year

You earn three weeks (21 days) of basic wage for each year of service, pro-rated for partial years. Multiply your daily wage by 21, then by your years of service.

03Worked example — 5 years at QAR 5,000 basic

Daily wage = QAR 166.67. Per year: 21 × 166.67 = QAR 3,500. Over five years: 3,500 × 5 = QAR 17,500.

04Common mistake: the old escalating tiers

Many calculators still add 4 weeks per year after 5 years and 5 weeks after 10. Those tiers were repealed by the 2004 law and now apply only if your individual contract grants them. The statutory minimum is a flat 21 days for every year.

Yes, once you complete one continuous year of service. Below one year, no gratuity is due.

Does resigning reduce my gratuity in Qatar?

No. After one year, resignation and termination pay the same. Only dismissal for gross misconduct under Article 61 forfeits it.

Is it on basic or total salary?

Basic wage only, using your last basic wage. Allowances are excluded.
